| Will a boycott hurt Africa? |
Many diamond-sponsored sites disingenuously state that a complete diamond ban would unfairly hurt African countries not involved in conflict diamonds. That claim is absurd. Many of the diamond mining areas of Africa are the poorest, despite millions of diamonds being mined there. A boycott will hurt the large diamond companies like De Beers. Show me the native Africans who have gotten rich from diamonds. Show me the affluent African countries made strong by the diamond trade. I'll show you the countless villages without clean drinking water whose villagers are paid nearly nothing for their backbreaking work. I'll show you diamonds that are bought for 20 dollars in Africa and sold for 1,500 in a Antwerp. No, Africans have not benefited from diamonds. Diamonds have been a curse for them and it's time that curse stopped.
